The Lorain YWCA was founded in the 1950’s. The YWCA was a very vital organization and offered a variety of programs to women, teens and girls. One of the organizers of the newly founded association was Helen V. Mulholland who was the Executive Director of the Elyria YWCA at the time. The YWCA flourished until the 1960’s when there was a “split” within the organization between those women who wanted to merge with the local YMCA which was embarking on a new building campaign to build a facility on Tower Boulevard, and the women who wanted to remain an autonomous women’s movement.

Despite the drop in numbers, the YWCA continued to offer programs that addressed the needs of women and girls in the surrounding neighborhoods; most notably the Encore Breast Cancer Program, babysitting classes, Women of Achievement, and the annual collection and distribution of turkeys and food baskets each November.

In 2002 the Lorain YWCA entered into a strategic partnership with the Elyria YWCA to offer joint programming for women in the area of racial justice and women’s economic empowerment. The Community Anti-hate Taskforce and the Hate Free Lorain County Conference were the inaugural programs offered through the strategic partnership. Another venture, the YWCA Women’s Center of Lorain opened in October 2007.

Strengthened by diversity, the YWCA draws together members who strive to create opportunities for women’s growth, leadership and power to attain a common vision: peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all

The Young Women’s Christian Association of the United States of America is a women’s membership movement nourished by its roots in the Christian faith and sustained by the richness of many beliefs and values. Strengthened by diversity, the Association draws together members who strive to create opportunities for women’s growth, leadership and power in order to attain a common vision:

Peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all people.

The Association will thrust its collective power toward the elimination of racism wherever it exists and by any means necessary.
